In sweltering heat, the Huskies hit the field at Exeter with energy and enthusiasm, fully aware they were facing a formidable opponent. Exeter's speed was evident from the start, but the Huskies stepped up to the challenge, matching the pace and delivering a thrilling, fast-paced game of back-and-forth field hockey.
Early on, the Huskies drew an offensive corner and narrowly missed an incredible opportunity with a shot tipped just wide. Undeterred, Kelsey Baker broke through soon after, finding the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Exeter responded with an equalizer just under five minutes before halftime.
Despite the intense heat and growing fatigue, the Huskies showed resilience and came out firing in the second half. They left everything on the field, playing with composure and intensity. Our defense, from one end of the field to the other, was rock solid, with players tirelessly making runs and connecting on strong passes. Mary-Ann was a standout in goal, defending ten penalty corners and making several crucial saves.
Exeter managed to score the game-winner with under two minutes left on the clock, securing a 2-1 victory. However, the Huskies’ effort was nothing short of impressive. They should take pride in their hard work and determination. It was an exciting and commendable first game, setting a high bar for the season.
