On a warm Monday afternoon, the Huskies traveled to St. Paul’s School, eager for an exciting game under the lights. Despite the Pelicans coming out fast and strong, the Huskies maintained their composure, quickly adjusting and pushing the ball into the offensive zone.
The first quarter was a hard-fought battle with both teams exchanging opportunities. However, the momentum shifted when Kennedy Walker was fouled inside the circle, drawing a penalty stroke. With precision and power, Kennedy fired a shot past the goaltender’s stick side, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Huskies faced adversity, receiving two green cards that left them two players down for a brief period. However, the team adapted, playing smart defense and preventing St. Paul’s from capitalizing on the advantage. Just before halftime, Julia Loughlin applied intense pressure, winning possession at the 16-yard line, dribbling into the circle, and unleashing a drive that flew past the Pelicans’ goalie, extending the lead to 2-0. With less than a minute remaining in the half, Reagan Comora delivered a flat pass across the top of the circle, which Kelsey Baker ultimately capitalized on, pushing the ball into the circle where Julia Loughlin tipped it into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.
As the second half began, St. Paul’s fan section grew louder, but the Huskies thrived off the energy. The Pelicans increased their pressure, leading to a few chaotic moments in the Huskies’ defensive circle, but goaltender Mary-Ann McMaugh was outstanding. She made 10 difficult saves and helped shut down seven St. Paul’s penalty corners with the help of a strong defensive unit.
While the Huskies only drew two offensive penalty corners throughout the game, the Pelicans' quick defense kept them from getting off any shots. Despite a scoreless second half, the game remained intense, and every Husky on the field contributed to the team’s success. Their communication, crisp passing, and chemistry were evident both on and off the field.
It was a great day to be a Husky, and we look forward to more exciting games ahead!
