New Hampton Overcomes Slow Start to Edge Worcester Academy, 49-47
New Hampton had a slow start today in the opening game of the Nickerson Holiday Tournament at Noble & Greenough School (Dedham, MA), trailing Worcester Academy 5-17 after the first quarter. Elyse Ngenda '26 had all 5 points.
The tables turned in the second quarter as the Huskies outscored WA 16-9. Junior Serenity Lancaster heated up and netted 9 points, including a 3-for-3 performance from the charity stripe. Senior Tahlia Pena hit one of her three triples on the day and Ngenda added 4 more points to cut the deficit to 5 at the half.
New Hampton had a very strong third period and took the lead for good with just under 5 minutes on the clock. Ngenda had three straight buckets, sophomore Shannon O'Leary chipped in with 4 points, and the team began to dominate on the boards. Senior Adriana Hernandez drew her second charge of the season and was a defensive catalyst for NHS. She also contributed 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Worcester battled back in the 4th quarter and cut the lead to 2 with 24 seconds remaining in the game, but the Huskies were able to hold on for the W and improve to 6-0.
Lancaster ended the game with a double-double (16 pts/15 reb) while Ngenda had a game-high 17 points to go with 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Ava Perry '27 also grabbed 7 boards to round out the team's 43 rebounds on the day.
The Huskies will face Northfield Mount Hermon at 6pm tomorrow.
