Rough League Opener for the Huskies

The varsity golf team travelled west today to take on Kimball Union Academy in their league opener. With the temperature in the low 40’s, winds sustained at 20 mph, and gusts of up to 35 mph, along with a few bouts of sleet pellets, the Huskies knew that the course record at Newport Golf Club was safe. It was not a day that you would particularly choose to play golf, but as the varsity golf team knows, if we waited for the weather to be just right, we’d only play a few rounds.
Leading off in the one and two spots were team co captains Mark and Jack. Both players faced tough competitors in the first group off the tee. Mark fired off the low round of the day shooting a 5 over par 41. Marks opponent shot one stroke higher but still managed to halve the match on the final hole. That’s match play. Shooting a lower score does not always guarantee a win.
In the second group off the tee, second year team member Eli and first year team member Matt won all three points that were up for grabs in their foursome. Matt carded the third lowest round of the day, posting a 7 over par 43. The second lowest belonging to KUA.
In the final pairing off the tee was second year team member Colin and first year team member Ben. Colin took his match all square to the ninth tee, grinding back and forth the whole way through. His tee shot found trouble and his opponent capitalized on the oppurtunity. His scorecard shows that it was a hard fought match.
All six players played with grit and determination today. However, Mother Nature, aerated greens, and not having a strong knowledge of the course layout, all served to be contributing factors in keeping the Huskies at bay and kept them from going low.
