NHS vs. Pomfret

Dana Volk
The Huskies travel down to Pomfret and come up short against Pomfret School.
The girls did their best to warm up their legs after a long bus ride down to Connecticut, but they just couldn't match the Griffin's who came flying out of the gate on their home ice. An NHS defensive breakdown in the first period led to a goal by Pomfret on Husky goalie Heather King. Strong offensive play by Andrea Odermatt with a great shot on net. Abby Rutt had a cannon and for a tip in front to get an offensive swing in favor of New Hampton. Odermatt acquired a boarding call at 2:55 left in the first and the Huskies prove to have a strong penalty killing unit yet again led by Dempsey Arsenault who had a great offensive chance. King maintained her composure facing shot after shot to keep the game at 0-1 for most of the period. With 37.9 seconds left, another defensive breakdown allowed one of the Griffin's to walk around Husky defense and slide the puck through King's five hole. Abby Rutt had a great chance right at the end of the period when she blasted a shot from center ice.
The Huskies attempted to turn the momentum in their favor in the second, and although no goals were scored, they held the score at 0-2. King came up with a big save on a 2 on 1 opportunity. Dori Craig and Mallory Rushton moved the puck well to generate more offensive opporunities. Rutt held strong on the blue line, keeping the puck in and getting a beautiful shot on net. The Huskies went on a powerplay and Gabby Vautour and Allie Munroe had a great scoring chances on the man up situation. King came up big for green again halfway through the second during a defensive scramble. Vautour was fiesty along the boards and helped feed the puck to her linemates. Rushton had another fantastic scoring chance with 4:44 left in the period and Craig followed it up with a rebound attempt that Pomfret's goalie just barely held onto. Odermatt had a face-off win leading to a shot on net eith 3 minutes left in the second. At the end of the period, Rachel Legg came flying off the bench to make a beautiful defensive play, keeping red and black from getting a shot on net. In the third period, King continued to show her strengths in net, especially while on the PK. Munroe stood her ground on the PK as well and held Pomfret's offense from scoring. Lizzie Aveson proved that hard work on the boards leads to scoring chances when she battled for the puck in the corner and drove it to the net after gaining control. The Huskies finally found net when Courtney Moulton walked the puck around of the back of the net and stuffed it between the post and Griffin Goaltender with 6:40 left in the third period. Green and white fought until the end to get more scoring chances but passes were not connecting and bounces didn't go their way. The buzzer rang and Pomfret had secured their 2-1 victory over the NHS.
