The Governors Had a Ball

Matthew Belmonte
The 2025 New Hampton varsity golf team tee’d off their season opener against The Governors Academy at Ould Newbury Golf Course in Newbury Ma. The Gov’s campus abuts their home course which allows them to play there regularly and gives them a strong knowledge in the layout. This proved to be a key factor in the match as they went on to take down the Huskies in all 8 matches. Only 7 matches counted for the team total while the 8 spot was more for the experience in match play format. The greens at Ould Newbury are extremely small. If you miss on your approach shot, you are scrambling. This is where familiarity in the course comes in handy.
The team played a practice round last week at Hidden Creek Golf Club that served as a qualifier to see which of the twelve players on the roster would play in the season opener. The Husky co captains, four year team veteran Jack Kidd and three year team veteran Mark Belcher were two of the starters, along with veteran players Grady Moore, Eli Arvidson, Colin Flanders and Ray MacDougall, and new team members Matthew Homer and Brody Merrick. The four other new players to the pack this season, Jaedyn Feaster, Sean Connors, Ben Bourbeau and Jeffrey Joyce will be squaring off in simulator matches this week to determine who will be playing , weather permitting, in our next match against Phillips Exeter. This would be a makeup match after being postponed because of weather.
It should be mentioned that in that practice round, Mark shot a career low nine hole round of 4 under par. Quite impressive to say the least. Congratulations to Mark on that spectacular round of golf.
