The Husky varsity golf team travelled to Concord CC to take on St. Paul’s. We are happy to welcome the St Pauls golf team into the Lakes Region league and we look forward to many rounds on the links with them.
Teeing off in the first group was Mark and Jack. Right out of the gate the captains found themselves down to their opponents. Mark faced a tough competitor in Concords number one starter. His opponent gained a lead on the first hole and surrendered it briefly on the third to go all square. He regained the lead and held onto it to close Mark out on the eighth hole. Although Mark lost his match, his will to hang in the match and still fire off some pars, proved to be pivotal in the best ball point. The holes that his playing partner Jack were out of in the best ball match, were won with Marks scores. That best ball point is so important in the team score, and the co captain knows this. Even if your match is closed out you’re still in the match.
In the number two spot Jack found himself down two with three to play. In match play this is never a fun spot to be in. Knowing that there is almost zero room for error, you must stay within your own game, swing the club like you know how to, and drop some putts. This is exactly what Jack did. He won the seventh, halved the eighth, and won the ninth hole to bring the match to all square. That is what 4 years of match play format on the varsity team will do to a golfer. It teaches you to grind out every hole till the very end. Together Mark shooting a 41 and Jack shooting a 43 secured 1.5 points.
In the second pairing was Eli and Matt. Eli went down one in the first two holes, got it back to even, and put the pedal down on the fifth and kept it there. Despite one hiccup on the seventh hole, Eli closed his match out on the eighth green shooting another solid round, 42.
Matt continued to show why he made the varsity squad this year. Matt won his third match in a row for the Huskies. He found himself down two with four holes left to play. This is also a, not so fun spot to be in. That makes the sixth hole virtually a must win. So that’s what Matt did, he won the sixth hole and then went on to win the seventh, eighth, and halved the ninth to win his match plus one shooting a 45. Here’s what makes our point system so much fun. Both Eli and Matt won their match’s, however, they lost the best ball point. Our point system keeps all the players involved throughout the nine holes and teaches the value and importance of not giving up on a round. Together they combined for 2 points.
The final pairing featured Colin and Sean. Colins game has been taking form rapidly and it is showing in his scores. Colin had the lead till the third, lost it on the fourth and then halved every hole till the eighth. He waited patiently, playing smart and defensively, until he found his chance to strike. With his opponent in trouble on the eighth hole, Colin capitalized and won the hole, carrying that momentum into the ninth hole, to which he won to close the match out 2 and 0. Colin shot another great round of 42 securing a point and contributing to the best ball point.
Sean found himself in a dog fight of a match. Down one, even, down one, even, down one, even, up one and then even. Back and forth all the way to the ninth tee. Unfortunately Sean’s opponent bested him by one shot on the final green to hand Sean a loss. But the grit and competitiveness that Sean displayed in his match, was enough to earn him a win in the coach’s mind. His result does not reflect a win but his ability to hang in the match earns him a lot of points in the coach’s book! Sean fired off two pars to help record a 47. Those two pars were the winning scores on two crucial holes. Big time contributions to the best ball match from Sean. Two points were secured in the final group to help the Huskies earn their first team win!
