The Huskies took to the road for a thrilling quarterfinal game against Canterbury at Deerfield Academy. Despite the disappointment of missing a home-field advantage, the team enjoyed a smooth and scenic drive to Western Massachusetts, ready to bring their A-game.
From the opening whistle, the Huskies established control, quickly putting pressure on Canterbury, who won the coin toss and started with possession. Adjusting to the faster turf surface, the Huskies attacked aggressively, moving the ball with confidence and speed. Their early shots, though skillfully placed, missed just wide or were blocked by an attentive Canterbury goalie.
After regrouping between quarters, the Huskies came back stronger. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Julia Loughlin capitalized on a scramble in the circle, driving the ball into the back of the net to put the Huskies up 1-0. The momentum built, and soon after, Kennedy Walker made an impressive run up the right side, sending a clean cross to Julia, who struck a beautiful shot from the top of the circle, sending the ball past the Canterbury keeper to make it 2-0.
At halftime, the team focused on using the full width of the field, communicating, and making quick, precise passes. The Huskies executed these adjustments well, controlling play through the third quarter. Despite earning multiple offensive corners and creating promising opportunities, they were unable to increase the lead. But the Huskies’ persistence paid off in the fourth quarter when Kelsey connected with Cara on a corner play, who sent the ball back to Kelsey. In the resulting scramble, Julia managed to lift the ball past the goalie, completing her hat trick and extending the lead to 3-0.
Throughout the game, the Huskies maintained their defensive dominance, effectively shutting down Canterbury’s attempts to push upfield. The team’s solid defense and quick recovery kept Canterbury’s offense scoreless, securing a well-deserved 3-0 win and a spot in the semifinals.
The Huskies are excited to host the semifinal game at home this Saturday at 2 PM against Newton Country Day. With two days to prepare, they’re ready to bring the energy and teamwork back to the field. Go Huskies!
